About Us

Our History

The Baker Lighting Lab was founded in 1986 through an endowed gift from Frederick Charles Baker to the School the Architecture and Allied Arts (now the College of Design). Over the last few decades, the Baker Lighting Lab has supported a range of academic courses, faculty appointments, student scholarships, design projects, and research on light.  Baker Lighting Lab joined the Institute for Health in the Built Environment in 2018 as a founding lab and continues to collaborate closely with researchers in the Energy Studies Building Lab and the Biology in the Built Environment Center.

About the Lab

The Baker Lighting Lab supports design and research on natural and artificial lighting systems within the built environment.  Building on a rich tradition of evidence-driven sustainable design at the University of Oregon, the Baker Lighting Lab enriches the study of light in architecture by providing physical and digital tools for measurement, simulation, and design exploration.   This allows students to test design ideas through physical and digital prototypes for both artificial light fixtures and daylight design strategies.

Situated within the College of Design, the Baker Lighting Lab also promotes research on the advancement of lighting technologies, analysis methods & tools, and integrated approaches for sustainable design. Research areas include the psychological, physiological, and energy-efficient integration of natural and artificial light in buildings.  Baker’s dual role as a research and learning lab make it a unique asset to both faculty and students who have an interest in the study of light in architecture.
